Older People
Older People and The North Yorkshire Talking Therapies Service
The North Yorkshire Talking Therapies Service has identified Older People as a special group and it is actively working to increase the number of over 65’s entering the service. Recent initiatives have included creating Older Adult champions in service, running specialist training for all clinical staff and reaching out to organisations in the community that can help us reach those in need. Since this work has started the number of older adult referrals has nearly doubled, however, we still want to improve on this.
It is estimated that one in five over-65’s living in the community is affected by depression. However, the proportion of people over 65 years old referred to Talking Therapies services is lower than the proportion in the general population. This seems to drop further as age increases.
Once Older People are referred to Talking Therapies, national data shows that a greater proportion ‘complete treatment’ and achieve ‘recovery’ and North Yorkshire Talking Therapies is working hard to continue to encourage more Older People to refer into our service if they think they need help and support for to improve their mental health.
